Transport and logistics group DSV has agreed to use CMA CGM’s lower-carbon shipping service over two years, targeting a reduction of 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from ocean freight. Ship & Bunker reported that the arrangement will draw on second-generation UCOME-based biofuels and bio-LNG, citing a CMA CGM press release dated 7 October.
The agreement falls under the container line’s ACT+ programme, which offers customers several levels of emissions reduction against conventional marine fuel use. According to the report, customers can select reductions of 10%, 25%, 50% or up to 83% in their shipments’ well-to-wake CO2 emissions. The 12,000-tonne figure is the reduction DSV is seeking over the agreement’s two-year term, rather than a saving already achieved.
ACT+ accounts for the lower-carbon fuels through a mass-balance system. Fuel quantities and the emissions benefits linked to them are recorded and assigned to particular shipments. This means the accounting allocation does not depend on the relevant fuel being delivered to the same vessel that transports a customer’s cargo. Customers can instead receive the associated emissions benefit from lower-carbon fuel use across CMA CGM’s services.
For participating customers, the programme provides a formal declaration confirming the emissions reductions attributed to their shipments. Those declarations are independently verified by a third party, Ship & Bunker reported. ACT+ also makes carbon offsetting available for emissions that remain, alongside the reductions associated with lower-carbon fuel use. The reported arrangement therefore combines a choice of fuels with a system for allocating and documenting shipment-level emissions benefits.
The partnership supports DSV’s ambition to reach net-zero emissions throughout its operations and value chain by 2050. CMA CGM has also set a 2050 target for net-zero carbon emissions. The two-year agreement links those longer-term objectives to DSV’s stated ocean freight reduction target through the container line’s existing lower-carbon shipping programme.
